The scenery was exquisite. In Ushuaia we took a ride on a very narrow gauge train to a scenic national park. The train once transported prisoners. Then in a local restaurant we were treated to a lamb barbecue. In traveling by bus, train, and boat that day we were continually astounded by the exquisite vistas.

Ushuaia is the main city on the big island of Tierra del Fuego. It has a population of 45,000. Founded in 1870, this place was one of the first points where the Anglicans encountered the Yamana Indians
Another place we stopped at one morning was Yendegaia Bay. We visited an old ranch that is now part of a private reserve. We took a two hour walk in this area, finding new scenic views and spotting new birds. In the afternoon our boat took us to Puerto Williams, a city of 2,500 inhabitants. view

At Puerto Williams one could either take the anthropological tours (Martin Gusinde Museum), a tour to Omora Park, a walking tour, or the ornithological tour. At the local garbage dump the bird watchers spotted many chimango caracaras. Later on there was even time to purchase some local crafts.
